Lithology
Lithology is a boutique winery based in St. Helena, Napa Valley. Its name refers to the study of rocks, immediately pointing to the role of soil, bedrock, slope, and geological structure in shaping wine character. Developed by Alejandro Bulgheroni, Lithology is not built around scale; it is built around top vineyard sites and small-lot winemaking that reveal how Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon changes from one exceptional vineyard to another. The property's own history gives the project additional depth: the estate was connected to the early development of H. William Harlan's wine interests, was once associated with the early home of Promontory Wine, and was one of the places tied to the earliest vintages of The Napa Valley Reserve.
The winery's vineyard resources are central to its identity. Its portfolio includes Cabernet Sauvignon from Beckstoffer To Kalon, Beckstoffer Dr. Crane, and Beckstoffer Las Piedras, along with the flagship Alejandro Bulgheroni Cabernet Sauvignon. To Kalon, Dr. Crane, and Las Piedras are among the most recognizable names in the world of Napa Cabernet. Each brings different dimensions of structure, minerality, aromatic depth, and tannin shape. Lithology's strength lies in treating these sites not merely as famous labels, but as distinct voices within a single winery program, allowing the character of each vineyard to be compared and understood.
The winemaking team adds another layer of credibility. Matt Sands serves as winemaker and general manager, bringing experience from New Zealand's Waiheke Island as well as time at Screaming Eagle and Bryant Estate. The consulting team has included Michel Rolland, Philippe Melka, and Maayan Koschitzky, all highly respected figures in Napa and international fine wine. Lithology has achieved strong critical recognition in recent years, including high scores and near-perfect or perfect-score attention from major reviewers. From a trade perspective, it belongs in the context of limited-allocation, single-vineyard, collectible Napa Cabernet.
