4 Winds Winery
4 Winds is a boutique Cabernet Sauvignon project from Napa Valley's Stags Leap District, created by Roy and Jane Chapin and made by Thomas Rivers Brown. Stags Leap District is one of Napa's most distinctive Cabernet appellations, often described by the famous image of an "iron fist in a velvet glove." The wines can have both power and structure, but also refined tannins and an elegant mouthfeel. The value of 4 Winds is built precisely on this appellation character and on the winemaking judgment of Thomas Rivers Brown.
The fruit source is closely tied to the classic landscape of Stags Leap District. The appellation lies along the western side of the Vaca range, with volcanic remnants, colluvial soils, and river deposits creating complex growing conditions. Warm daytime sunlight helps Cabernet Sauvignon ripen, while cooler evening air from San Pablo Bay preserves acidity and aromatics. 4 Winds has used fruit from representative local vineyards such as Steltzner and Regusci, allowing the wine to show the balance of ripe black fruit, fine tannins, and mineral structure associated with the district.
Thomas Rivers Brown's involvement is one of the project's strongest professional endorsements. He has deep experience with top Napa Cabernet as well as Sonoma Pinot Noir, and he is known for delivering wines that balance concentration, texture, and drinkability. From a trade perspective, 4 Winds is a representative small-production Stags Leap District Cabernet. Its story is straightforward: prestigious appellation, respected vineyards, top winemaker, and limited production. It can serve as an elegant Napa Cabernet option alongside Howell Mountain, Oakville, or Rutherford wines.
