Flowers Vineyards & Winery
Flowers Vineyards & Winery is an important Sonoma Coast producer of high-end Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Founded by Walt and Joan Flowers in the 1990s, the winery's historically significant site is Camp Meeting Ridge, a high-elevation, cool, coastal vineyard close to the Pacific Ocean. In the early 1990s, planting grapes in such a remote, windy, cool, and risky coastal ridge environment was not a conservative choice. The pioneering importance of Flowers is that it helped prove that the extreme Sonoma Coast could produce Pinot Noir and Chardonnay with tension, depth, and identity.
The estate vineyards sit on high coastal ridges shaped by fog, ocean wind, and poor soils. Grapes ripen slowly and yields are limited. These conditions help Pinot Noir retain vivid acidity, red fruit, floral notes, and fine tannins, while Chardonnay shows citrus, apple, minerality, and firm structure. Compared with warmer-region styles that may be rounder and heavier, Flowers wines emphasize coastal coolness, clear lines, and complexity with age.
Flowers has long been admired by sommeliers, restaurants, and cool-climate wine lovers, and many wines have received strong reviews from major publications. In trade terms, it belongs in the premium Pinot Noir and Chardonnay category, providing an important complement to Napa Cabernet. It is especially suitable for fine dining, seafood and refined cuisine, cool-climate themed tastings, and high-end retail. A good profile should emphasize its pioneering role, high coastal vineyards, and independent style rather than simply calling it a Sonoma Pinot Noir producer.
